Going to the Hall

Thanks for returning!

This adventure, was an fairly easy one, comparing it to my Kevin Smith ordeal! But, this was an autograph trip, most collectors dream about!

Here we go, once again!

Way back in February, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame (YES, Canada has a baseball HOF too!) announced their 2009 inductees. I was pleased to see, in my opinion, the greatest Canadian ball player was amongst the list. Larry Walker was given his due, and was going to St. Mary's! St. Mary's, in case you didn't know, is the home to the Canadian Baseball HOF. Also, being inducted was Ernie Whitt, Bernie Soulliere, and the late, Roy 'Doc' Miller.

Walker, a true five-tool player whose career spanned 17 seasons, leads all Canadians in virtually every offensive career category, amassing 383 homeruns, 62 triples and 471 doubles among his 2,160 career hits, while stealing 230 bases along the way. The five-time All-Star and 1997 National League MVP, who also won seven Gold Glove awards and three batting titles along the way, compiled a career .313 batting average and .565 slugging percentage, 15th best in major league history. I always admired him as both a player and as an autograph signer. You see, most baseball players are extremely difficult athletes to get to sign, as most collectors would agree. However, all collecors know that hockey players are the best for autographing...and Walker was more like a hockey player, than baseball player when it came to his signing habits. It could also be a Canadian thing, too!

Whitt, whose 1,218 games played in a Toronto Blue Jays uniform ranks fourth all-time, swung a big bat as well, knocking 131 homers among his 888 Blue Jay hits. Always a fan-favourite in Toronto, he eventually returned to the Blue Jays organization as a coach for a dozen more years, including the last four seasons with the major league club. Whitt was always a personal favorite of mine as a child, as he was always the catcher whenever my dad took me to old Exhibition Stadium.

Soulliere, who has helped make Windsor, Ontario one of Canada's true baseball hotbeds, has been volunteering behind the scenes for more than 40 years in amateur baseball circles as well as with numerous provincial and national teams.

Miller, whose professional career began in 1903 had his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs in 1910, and played with Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati during his five-year stint. His .295 career batting average, which is fourth all-time for Canadians, included 507 hits in 1,717 at bats over 557 games. Miller's breakout year was 1911, when he led the National League with 192 hits, and his .333 batting average fell one point shy of winning the NL batting title that was captured by Honus Wagner (.334). Most would argue that, until Ferguson Jenkins came along, that Miller was the best Canadian player of all.

With all that said, the only real person I wanted an autograph from, was indeed Larry Walker. I also thought of possibly taking a photo with Whitt, as I had an autograph from him previously. I told Corinna of the announcement, which she mentioned to remind her when the snow melted!

Fast forward to this past week, I kept touch with the Hall's upcoming activities concerning the induction. After visiting their website, Facebook page, and getting an email inviting us to the Hall, I found out there was to be an 'Celebrity Softball Game' on Thursday. The celebrities included some local talent, from tv and radio, and more importantly Canadian pitcher Ferguson Jenkins. For those of you who don't know who Fergie is, he is the greatest Canadian pitcher of all time, and is inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I've had the pleasure of meeting Fergie previously, and asking him for an autograph. Truth be told, I've gotten Fergie twice...once on a Cy Young winners baseball, and most recently on a official HOF baseball. I figured if Fergie was to appear, I'd ask for an photo with the legend, instead of another autograph. No point on being super-greedy here!

The Celeb game was to take place on the Hall's grounds, at one of their 3 ball fields, with the inductees taking part as coaches. So, the seed was planted on when and where I could meet Walker, Whitt, and Jenkins. The plan ended up being this; when Corinna arrived home, she'd get changed, and we'd leave for St. Mary's almost immediately afterards. We'd drive up to St. Mary's, grab a bite on the road, arrive at the Hall, check out the celeb game, and hopefully catch up with Walker et al.

With the plan set, I needed something for Walker to sign. I already had an Official MLB Rawlings baseball, so I figured I'd ask him to sign it on the sweetspot. I also decided that I would like an 8x10 signed if possible. So, where to look? I decided to try Frozen Pond in Toronto, because they do sell unsigned 8x10's, and since I'd be driving by coming from Newmarket. When I arrived at Frozen Pond, I was surprised that they did not have any Walker 8x10's. In fact, they didn't have Jenkins or Whitt either. Strange, since they're a Canadian shop. Moving on, I came home empty handed, planning on just have Walker sign my ball, giving up on the 8x10 idea.

When Thursday arrived, we got going after Corinna got home from work. On the drive up, we talked about the crowd should be slim, since the induction ceremony was on Saturday and most people would be in town for that, instead of the celeb softball game. We arrived in beautiful St. Mary's, a small town in South Western Ontario, around 6:15pm. The game was to start at 7, so we made good time. We got to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, and parked on the grounds. Together, we walked up to the Hall, and we looked around the grounds for Walker et al, unsuccessfully. However, we spotted the (large) beer tent, and spotted the ball field the game was to be held on. After one final looksy for the inductees, I mentioned to Corinna that I wanted to go in the Hall to take a look around. Once I walked in, I automatically switched into autograph mode! The person I spotted inside the Hall, was Walker himself! He was being shown around the Hall, with his family and the other inductees, by Hall employees. YES! I quickly went into my bag, and grabbed my ball and pen for Larry Walker to sign. Corinna stood nearby, checking out the Hall's many exhibits. Once the tour concluded, Walker was walked outside passing me. I quickly spoke "Larry, could I get your autograph?", with no repsonse from Larry. Corinna quickly spoke to me "He didn't hear you, you're spoeaking to softly!!". For those of you who know me...that was weird, because quiet I'm not!

Corinna and I followed Walker outside, where I asked him again...with his attention. Now, Walker is a big man, and is kind of intimidating to approach, so I was nervous that he might say no...considering his family was with him too. I also noticed about 4 or 5 other autograph seekers waiting outside, watching my interaction with him...also to see if he'd sign! When I asked him this time, he said "Sure". I handed him my ball and pen, and he put the ball close to his body to sign it. I saw he wasn't about to sign the sweetspot, and I quickly interrupted him by speaking "Oh, could you sign the sweetspot?!", he stopped and rolled the ball to the sweetspot, and mentioned "You gotta tell me sweetspot!". He placed his signature beatifully on the sweetspot, which I thanked him for. I asked him for a photo with him, once he finished signing for the others that gathered around, which he agreed to.

After he signed a couple of autographs, he turned to me and nodded for the picture. Corinna got in place, pointed our camera, and said "smile!". She took a nice picture of the new Hall of famer and I, on the steps of the Hall. I was very happy at that moment. I finally got the autograph of my favourite Canadian baseball player, and just got a photo with him too!

I noticed Whitt hadn't come out of the Hall, so we went in to see where he was. Upon entry to the Hall, there is a small kiosk where they sell souvenirs. I saw that they had an Team Canada 8x10 photo of Larry Walker for sale, which I asked Corinna if she should get signed, if I bought it. She said sure. It's been awhile since she's asked for an autograph! After buying the 8x10 for 5 bucks, I gave Corinna my Sharpie and the newly purchased photo, and she went outside to asked Walker for an autograph.

She went up to Walker, who was in conversation with an elderly lady, and patiently waited. After he finished up with the lady, he walked away, not noticing Corinna! Corinna followed him, looking worried! Thankfully, someone asked Walker for an autograph, which Corinna made herself seen and also asked for one too!

Larry signed for Corinna, placing a large autograph on the Team Canada 8x10. Success for Corinna!

After Corinna's personal autograph adventure, we spotted Ernie Whitt coming out of the Hall. He was signing a few autographs for people, as I asked Corinna if she would take a photo, she said that she wanted in the picture too, as she was a Whitt fan growing up too! So we asked a Hall employee to take our photo, then asked Ernie if we could take a photo together? He was more than gracious, saying yes! We posed for the pictured, with this new Hall of Famer, on the step of the Hall. Afterwards, we thanked him, and he continued to sign for fans.

Corinna and I decided to go inside the beer tent, not for a beer, just to sit down for a second, so I could put my stuff away! When we entered, Corinna's sharp eye (she's known for spotting celebrities!) spotted Fergie Jenkins sitting at a table with some friends. So, we sat down at the next table! I mentioned to Corinna, that I wanted a picture with Fergie, but didn't want to ask him while was with friends. I considered it kind of rude, to interupt private time. My feeling, wasn't shared with others apparently, as other fans came right up to Fergie asking for an autograph. Fergie did sign for people, while sitting down. However, I just couldn't bug him while he had a beer with buddies. I got up to find a washroom, and Corinna stayed behind to keep an eye on our things.

When I got back to our table, Corinna spoke "Quick ask him!". When I turned, Fergie was getting up to go! I quickly asked him for a picture together, as Corinna got the camera ready, and Fergie agreed. I stood with the legend, as Corinna took our picture! I thanked him kindly afterwards.

Within the span of 15 minutes, everything that I planned on doing, was accomplished.

As everyone there, started moving towards the game, Corinna and I went back to the Hall to properly look around the exhibits. After seeing a game-used Babe Ruth bat, the Cy Young award that Jenkins won, and the actual homeplate Joe Carter touched when he hit the World Series winning homerun, we decided to go home. Home was pretty far, and it looked like rain, so we skipped the celeb game. We stopped at a local ice cream shop, and got a couple cones to celebrate our successes!

About 15 minutes outside of St. Mary's, it started to rain!

This was one of the coolest autograph adventures we had recently, simply because of how easily accessable the players were! Thanks to the CBHOF, Larry Walker, Ernie Whitt, and Fergie Jenkins for everything. Special thanks, as always, to my beautiful wife, Corinna...who got her hands 'dirty' on this adventure with Larry Walker!

And again, thanks to you, for your time reading my latest posting!

Until next time,
Chris

Ps- Please consider leaving a comment, I'd love to hear what everyone thinks!

Chasing Kevin

Welcome back readers!

Apologies on delaying this adventure, but this it!

It's no big secret that my wife and I, are huge fans of Kevin Smith's films. We have all of the director's movies on DVD, and are considering upgrading them to Blu-ray...one of these fine days. What's equally enjoyable to us, are his "Evening with" series, in which Smith hosts interactive forums at universities...concert style. If you've never seen any of these hilarious and in-depth shows, you're really missing out! Smith's film credits include; Clerks 1 & 2, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, and most recently Zack & Miri Make A Porno. It's tough to pick an absolute favourite, but if I had to...I kind of lean towards 'Dogma'.

Let's get to the point of my blogs...autographing.

About 6 weeks ago, Corinna mentioned to me that she heard Kevin Smith was coming to Brantford or something. I basically dismissed it as rumour-mill stuff. Why would "Silent Bob" go to some small town in Ontario, like Brantford?! After doing some investigating, I found out some interesting news. Corinna was correct, Kevin Smith was coming to Brantford, to do an "Evening with Kevin Smith" at the Sanderson Centre. I was a little shocked to say the least. After further investigating, I found out more information about his visit to Gretzky's hometown.

Apparently, Walter Gretzky (Wayne dad's) was hosting a street hockey tournament in Brantford, and Kevin Smith heard about it. Smith, a major Gretz fan (like myself...I call him 'my dad') found out about Walt's tourney, and decided to put together a team of celebrities to take part! With the proceeds going to charity, it was a win-win for all envolved! Smith put together a ball-hockey team that was to include; Jason "Jay" Mewes, Scott Mosier (producer of all Smith's films), and other actors from his films. First thing I thought as I read the potential line up was..."Holy crap...Jay and Silent Bob are coming to Brantford!!...and it's only 25 minutes away!!"

I had decent time to prepare, but the real question was...what do I get signed? I thought of getting one of our DVD's signed, but then thought of how many people I could get on such a small item? My mind quickly shifted to getting a poster done. But there was two problems with the idea; What movie poster, and would it be okay to haul around to get signed? After seeing the roster of celebs that Smith was bringing to Brantford, and comparing them to the Smith movies they've appeared in, I decided to get an "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" poster. I decided to bring a flat board to put under the poster for everyone to sign, hoping it wouldn't get too wrecked!

I surprised Corinna with tickets to Kevin Smith's show in the Sanderson Centre. I told her that I'd like to go the street hockey tournament, as I wanted try to get his autograph, that's happening earlier in the day. She said sure. She was really looking forward to his speaking engagement. We found out that Smith was going to record a Podcast that night. Apparently Smith and Scott Mosier record "SModcasts" weekly, and this was to be the first live recording! I can't believe Brantford's luck! If Kevin were to ever read this...COME TO GUELPH! We have a University and a great auditorium called "The River Run Centre"!

Anyways, with plans set in place for the Saturday, I decided to begin my hunt for a JSBSB poster. After searching eBay, Craigslist, and Kijiji, I found a website & company called 'Movie Poster Warehouse'. After checking out their site, and seeing 1000's of movie posters, I found out they're based in Toronto. Awesome, now I can drive there, instead of paying for shipping and getting a possibly damaged poster. I sent an email requesting a price, and got an excellent offer. After driving to Toronto and back, I finally had my full sized JSBSB poster. Now, I'm ready to go to Brantford.

Saturday finally arrives, and we get up and get on the move. We arrive at Walter Gretzky's Street Hockey Tournament, in Brantford, around 10 am-ish. Kevin Smith's first game was at 11:30am. We located the rink his team were scheduled to play at, then found a good spot to wait for Smith et al. After checking out the schedule, we found out that Smith had sponsored 3 more teams, for his website fans to play. We thought that was terrific that he would do that for his fans, and for Walter's tourney. Thumbs up.

Around 11 o'clock, Kevin's van pulled into the parking lot, and we made our move. Breaking out the poster, I went directly to Kevin Smith as he popped out of the van and was checking out the surroundings. He asked which rink he was supposed to play at, and of course I responded, directing him to the proper area. I followed that up with "Kev, could I please get your autograph?" holding out my poster and Sharpie, that was ready to go.

I got shot down.

He said "Could you give me abit to see what's going on?", and I said sure, smiling. It wasn't rude or anything like that...he just seemed excited to be there, and wanted to see what was going on. The cool thing was, he was dressed in his "Silent Bob" full-length trench coat! It's refreshing to see, a guy who likes his schtick!

I quickly departed that situation, to try to bounce back with the other celebrities that were scheduled to be here. Next person I recoginized was Jennifer Schwalbach-
Smith. Jennifer is Kevin's wife, whom is an actress. She appeared in JSBSB, as one of the quartet of jewel thieves. She also had a major part in Clerks 2, as Dante's fiancee. I re-approached the van, where she was unloading her gear, and politely asked for her autograph. She said "Sure!" and stopped what she was doing, and kindly came over and was the first to put pen to poster that day! She has a great autograph, by the way! I asked her, while she signed, if she was going to be in Smith's new movie (which is filming in NYC, with Bruce Willis), and she laughed and turned to both Corinna and I, and stated "I'm acutally done with speaking roles! No more acting for me!" I thanked for her time and autograph, not really sure how to react to her comment. Both Corinna and I said, afterwards, we thought she was a good actress and wondered why she said that. Regardless, Jennifer was very kind and approachable, and we were happy to have met her.

After that, we went to the make-shift dressing room for Smith's team to try to get Kevin Smith, as he kind of made it seem that he would sign. We arrived to see him watching the current game, surrounded by security. Damn it! He went from watching the game, to go inside the dressing room. Missed him again. I realized getting Kevin Smith's autograph today, was not going to be easy. As I turned to go back to the parking lot area, Scott Mosier appeared with (actor) Bryan Johnson. Both went inside the dressing room, saying they'll be out in an minute to sign autographs. Mosier, the producer, appeared first. I nicely asked him for his autograph, and he replied positively. I rolled open my poster, and he quickly signed it near Jennifer's autograph. I asked if I could a picture with him too, unsure if he would...as he was dressed for ball-hockey! He said no problem, and stood for a cool picture with me!

He seemed kind of shy, but was great with the fans. I could tell, he was nervous about the upcoming game! Bryan Johnson came out after Mosier. Johnson is a writer/actor, who has made cameos in all of Smith's films. He really looks like a biker, rather than an actor however! I wasn't really sure, if he'd be into signing autographs, but I asked anyway! He immediately said yes, and dropped his hockey gear to sign my poster! I asked him if Walter Flanagan, his friend (and actor), was here yet? He responded with a F-bomb about Flanagan's non-appearance in Brantford! He was joking with me, but seemed genuinely upset that his friend didn't make the trip. Bryan was very kind with his time, and I thanked him for his autograph and wished him well in the tourney. Johnson is a cool dude.

I happened to turn away from Johnson to see Mosier walking towards me, on his way to the rink's entrance. I asked him if Jason Mewes, the actor who plays 'Jay', had made the trip to Brantford? Mosier responded with "No Mewes man, Mewes didn't make the trip". This was a big time bummer! But oh well, I had my hands full in trying to get Kevin Smith to sign my poster! I told Corinna about Mewes not making the trip, she said she figured as she didn't see him go inside. Smith's other teammates started coming out, as we patiently waited for Kevin's appearance. Strangely, adult movie star Katie Morgan (whom acted in Zach & Miri Make A Porno) came out of the dressing room, ready to play! I didn't bring anything for the porn-star, and didn't think Corinna would like it too much, if I asked her for an autograph! Anyways, Smith finally appeared...in full goaltender gear! There was NO way I getting an autograph.

Security + Goalie Equipment = No Autographs!

Kev made his way to the rink, and took to the game. Corinna and I got seats in the stands and watched Smith's team play. There was a few highlights, Mosier owing the ball when he had it. Smith making a few important stops. Johnson making it incredibly difficult for opponents to get into the defensive zone. Overall, they did okay, despite being rusty. However, they did lose their first game.

When the teams started to make their way off the rink surface, I positioned myself along the boards near the exit...to try to get Kevin to sign my poster, again. And again he didn't sign for me. Actually, he didn't sign for anybody. He and his team, went back to the dressing room, and went inside. Smith did re-appear to sign an autograph or two for a wheelchair-bound fan, whom had been waiting. Afterwards, Smith quickly went back inside. Man, this was going to be very tough. Both Corinna and I, started to worry if we could be successful with Smith. A few teammates started to come out, and mingle with the small crowd that had gathered. After chatting to Corinna about my odds, I noticed Katie Morgan was around the rightside of the dressing room building. I asked Corinna to take a picture of us, if Katie would agree. Corinna wasn't too thrilled at the idea, but agreed. As I approached Katie Morgan, I heard a commotion happening behind me. I turned to see about 4 security guards approaching me, and in the middle of them...was Kevin Smith. Standing right beside the building, I moved the fastest I did all day, and whipped out my Sharpie and rolled down my poster. The security group walked right past me, almost right through me, bringing Kevin Smith and I...face to face. I noticed he was carrying his luggage bag, and I figured it was going to be another "no". I quickly spoke; "Kev, could I get your autograph now?". I guess he remembered me from earlier that morning, and said "Yeah, sure".

In the middle of a pack of security guards and being followed by a crowd of fans, Kevin Smith stopped. He let go of his luggage bag, and took my blue Sharpie and signed my 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' poster. He handed my Sharpie back to me, and I thanked him. A second later, he and the entire posse of people moved another 15 feet forward to the van, and was gone 30 seconds later. A security guard came up to me afterwards and said I was lucky. No kidding buddy.

Corinna and I were all smiles, as it seemed he signed for nobody else. Now, from doing some investigating on Smith's signing habits, he's an excellent signer for his fans. However, this particular morning, he was challenging...to say the least. After talking about what just happened, and how DAMNED lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time, Corinna and I decided to get going. Other than Jason Mewes and Walter Flanagan, we had gotten everybody's autograph we had set out to get.

Later that afternoon, we lined up outside the Sanderson Centre, to get in to see Kevin Smith's gig. After waiting almost 3 hours outside, we finally got in, only to wait another 20 minutes to get into the theatre! Once inside, we got great seats about 8 rows back from the stage. It didn't take long before Corinna had to go potty! She went to the washroom, only to return really excited! Out in the lobby she spotted her favourite radio dj/personality Dean Blundell, from 102.1 The Edge! Now, if you know Corinna, you'd know she's a extremely loyal Blundell fan! She's constantly listening to his show, and talking about it afterwards...for days! I asked her if she wanted a picture with him? She said do you think he would? Of course he will, I answered! We made our way, back to the lobby...just as Dean was about to come into the theatre. After Corinna confirmed who he was, I approached him. I said; "Hi Dean, my wife is a big fan...can she get a photo with you?". I couldn't of wished for nicer guy! He was super nice! His face lite up and said; "Yes, no problem!" He then turned to Corinna, asked her name and thanked her for listening! She said that she listens to his show everyday...which is NOT a lie! I took the picture, and thanked him for his time. Then, he actually thanked me! He shook hands with Corinna, who was smiling ear to ear, and then asked me my name and shook my hand. It was a short, but great experience for Corinna (and I)!

Once back in our seats, Kevin Smith appeared on stage and the place went nuts!

His show was absolutely hilarious! It was worth every single penny spent, as Corinna and I almost peed our pants for almost 2 hours straight! When it was all said and done, it was a terrific day! Thanks to all the celebs for their time and kindess. Special thanks to Walter Gretzky for having a tournament, that made it all possible. I hope he raised alot of money for charity!

By the way, Kevin Smith swears he'll be back next year...if so...so will we.

Thanks for you time,

Chris

Crossing paths with Crosby (Part Two)

Welcome back readers!

I hope you enjoyed my last blog entry, this one should be more entertaining! This blog entry will conclude my adventures trying to get Sidney Crosby's autograph. I hope you'll enjoy it!

Corinna and I exchanged gifts for Christmas, back in December 2004. I remember that year I got her tickets to see Bon Jovi. Not bad, eh ladies?! Anyways, she had gotten me a Sidney Crosby Rimouski Oceanic jersey, which I loved immediately! As we sat there, in her parents living room, I put that dark blue #87 jersey on for the first time! She said it looks great! Then she said something that would stick with for long time; "Imagine if we got it signed?". Little did she know, the events that would happen because of those 6 words. Of note, I never put that jersey on again.

Fast forward three months, and some travel planning.

In March 2005, Corinna and I decided to go to eastern Quebec, to see Sidney Crosby and the Rimouski Oceanic play 2 games, over the span of a weekend. This was not going to be an easy drive. We loaded up my Grand Am Thursday night and left at 11pm, bound for Rimouski. Remember, this is March...the weather isn't always nice in Quebec during March for driving. However, the highways were in terrific shape, considering a blizzard blew through only 24 hours earlier! We arrived in Rimouski 10 hours later, and went to our hotel. We checked in around 9ish, and went for a nap (Corinna didn't really need one, as she slept basically the whole drive!). After a power nap, I gathered up my Crosby items I wanted signed, and we decided to go drive around the small city of Rimouski. The city is very historic, and is beautifully situated at the mouth of the St. Lawrence river. We came upon the "Colisee" where the Oceanic play, and went in to pick up our tickets for the next two games. The only tickets left for the rest of the season were standing room only, however there isn't a bad spot in the old arena. We felt lucky to get tickets regardless! After seeing more sights around the city, and eating...it was game time.

We arrived early Friday, to secure a good spot in the arena. I brought my Crosby jersey and a newspaper article that I had 'plaked' to get signed. We also brought our trusty camera to take some shots, and hopefully one with Sid...as we didn't think of a camera, the first time we met him in Kitchener. The game was a blow out. The Oceanic dominated, and I mean dominated. I beleive the final was 11-2 or something close like that. Crosby has 8 points himself. EIGHT POINTS! But, I also need to mention the people. The crowd loved Crosby. No, that's an understatement. The second he was on the ice, electricity shot through the Colisee...and everybody was feeding on it. Whenever he scored or got an assist, the crowd went haywire when the announcer spoke Crosby's name. They simply adored him, and showed it wonderfully. I haven't seen that kind of loving adoration, since Doug Gilmour's time in Toronto. Every single person in the house, was proud of him. It was special to be apart of. Both Corinna and I kept smiling throughout the game, just at the energy of the crowd. Rimouski's theme song, which was played whenever they scored, still echoes in my head today.

After the game, we made our way down to the Oceanic dressing room, hoping for an autograph (or hopefully two!) from Sid. There was a line that formed outside the entrance to the dressing room, and the players slowly began to leave. We waited about 10th or 11th in line, for Crosby to come out. Then he appeared. I was nervous that he might blow everybody off, since there were alot of fans. My fears were quashed immediately. He mentioned to someone, that he has to sign for everyone and would catch up later. How awesome is that?!!

The line was a little chaotic, but we finally made out way to Sidney Crosby, for the second time in our lives. We said hello and that we travelled from Guelph to watch him play, which he simply smiled at. He had his own black Sharpie in hand, and I asked him to use my blue Sharpie to sign my jersey, which he took and signed my jersey beautifully. I showed him my plak/newspaper article, which he placed his signature on...with not a problem. Just like that, we had 2 more Crosby autographs...and saw him play the game of his life! Corinna asked him if we could took a picture with him. He said sure, and we pressed in tight, as it was very crowded in the entrance area. We took a couple of shots, and turned to Crosby and thanked him for his time.

We stepped away, for the rest of the line to carry on. I was in seventh heaven, checking out my autographed items! Corinna brought me back to Earth. Our pictures weren't very good. The pictures were extreme close-ups, and weren't very good! Actually, Corinna and Sid look good, it was my mug that ruined the shot!

Here's the evidence;

We decided, or I begged her, to ask for another picture with him, once he was finished signing for his fans. Of course she agreed, seeing my ugly mug! We decided to go outside, bad move, to catch him by his truck. Normally I recommend this for meeting most hockey players, however in Rimouski during winter, it's a bad idea. It was at least -25 outside of the Colisee that night, without the wind! Thankfully, Sid came out quickly. We politely asked him if we could get another picture with him, as the other one didn't really turn out. He apologized about that, and said sure. This superstar was too nice! We quickly got in position, tried to stop shivering, and took another picture with Sidney Crosby. This photo, turned out much better. However, it is just a little strange. When the 3 of us stood beside eachother, I went to place my arm over Crosby's shoulder, which he kind of pulled away from! Remember in my previous posting I thought he was shy...this confirmed it! Regardless, we got a 'cool' shot outside the Colisee, in Rimouski, with the best junior player on the planet.

Here's the outside shot;

Notice my 'plak' and jersey in the bag, both signed!

This was turning out to be a fanastic weekend. We returned to our hotel for a late dinner, and some much-needed sleep. Saturday, March 12th, started with us driving around the city, just checking things out. We saw alot of beautiful churches and riverside buildings. Other than being super-cold, we really enjoyed the city. Soon, it was time to go the Colisee, to watch Crosby play. We arrived early, again to grab a decent spot to watch the game. The game was another Oceanic blow out. The game finished 12-5, with Sidney Crosby garnering 7 points. SEVEN POINTS!

In the two games, we saw him play back-to-back, he had 15 points. I've never seen production like that before, or since...at any level of hockey.

I was thinking, Gretzky just might be right...this could be the kid to break his records! He was simply magnificent to watch.

After the game, we went back to our hotel..which was situated right on the beautiful St. Lawrence river. Corinna mentioned she wanted to go and walk along the river's walkway. We strolled down to the river's walkway, and started to throw snowballs in the half frozen river! Did I mention that this was about midnight, and 30 below?! Anyways, little did Corinna know, I had alterior plans to our little walk. As she was throwing snowballs, she slipped in the snow! When she stood up, she turned to see me, on bended knee with an engagement ring! I proposed, and she accepted!

Readers, this had become the greatest weekend of my life!

In September 2006, we were married. Our honeymoon, also had a Crosby connection! Earlier that summer, I bought a few packs of 'SP Authentic' hockey cards, and pulled a Sidney Crosby autographed game-used patch hockey card. This super rare card, numbered out of 99, was going to pay for my honeymoon! I sold the 'Future Watch' card for $2000 American to a private collector in California. With that money, once converted, we bought and paid for our honeymoon in Cayo-Coco, Cuba!

Since then, we haven't seen Sidney Crosby in person, but have become huge fans of his. When he finally lifted the Stanley Cup, we both celebrated and were proud of him. He deserved it, in our opinion.

Thanks Sid, for everything.

And thanks for another read.

Chris

Ps- My Kevin Smith adventure will be written soon. My next autograph adventure will take place this Thursday, as I try to get Larry Walker's autograph! Don't know who Walker is? Ask any baseball fan, and they'll tell you...he's the best Canadian baseball player! I'll post my results soon!

Crossing paths with Crosby (Part One)

Hello readers!

I know that in my last posting, I mentioned I would write about my encounter with Kevin "Silent Bob" Smith. However since the Stanley Cup Final concluded last night, with Sidney Crosby winning his first ever Stanley cup, I figured I'd write about my adventures getting Sid the Kid's autograph!

Don't fret readers, my Kevin Smith autograph adventure is coming, soon enough!

Back in 2003, I heard about the "next big thing" in hockey. Some kid, that Wayne Gretzky dubbed 'the one' who would break his records. When my favourite player said something like that, I paid attention. Ever since, Sidney Crosby had been on my hockey mind. I said to myself, back then, if he's supposed to be that good, I'll get his autograph one day.

PART ONE (of two)

My wife, then girlfriend, mentioned to me in December 2003, that the Canadian World Junior Hockey team was to hold it's training camp in Kitchener...10 minutes from Guelph. She also said that Sidney Crosby was invited to attend. My response was, want to try to get his autograph? She said sure, and history was made! This was Corinna's first time getting autographs...and what a challenge for her first time out!

Not really having much Crosby memorabilia to get signed, we went to "The Aud" with a Team Canada puck. I actually brought a few pucks, as word was that a few big named prospects were there, including 'number 1 pick' Marc-Andre Fleury! We arrived to find about 20 other people seeking autographs too. You could quickly spot the 'pros', as they had 'big time stuff' to get signed. Believe it or not, most of them were there for Fleury, as he was the hottest prospect going.

The bus arrived, and the players entered the arena, with most stopping to sign for whomever asked. Fleury came in and signed for everyone, including us on an Team Canada puck. After the likes of Dion Phaneuf, Corey Perry, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Ian White passed by (and all signed), there was something wrong. Young Crosby never arrived. Everybody was shocked, as the 'hype' didn't come in. After about a minute, a smallish young kid came rushing in...and everybody went to him. Sidney Crosby said "I'm sorry guys, but I'm late...I'll catch you all later", and blew into the change-room.

Damn it!, Corinna and I said. She was hopeful however, and we were both happy that we just got Fleury's autograph! We decided that since it was an open practice, we would stick around to try get his autograph, and watch him play. We wanted to see what the hype was all about.

Team Canada took the ice, and went through their drills. There was well over a hundred people there that morning, and most of them were scouts. Everybody wanted to see Crosby though. After the drills and scrimmage, they decided to do breakaways...how cool was that?!!

First, Mike Richards went in on Fleury, save. Then Jeff Carter tried, save. Sidney Crosby was next. As he broke in on Fleury, he kicked back his leg...something I've never seen before...and deked out Fleury, a scored a beauty! Right there, we became Crosby fans! These breakaway drills carried on for awhile, and finally Crosby was coming off the ice.

I was positioned right beside the door leading off the ice, heading to the dressing room. As Crosby stepped off the ice, and turned to Corinna and I (and a couple other collectors) and said "Sorry I didn't sign earlier guys!" and took my paint-pen and signed my puck! Imagine that...Crosby apologized to us for not being able to sign an autograph! He handed my Team Canada puck to me, and kept my pen to sign for others. After a minute, he thanked me for my paint-pen and went to the dressing room. We just got the autograph from 'Sid the Kid', and he was super to deal with!

Corinna really enjoyed the experience, and mentioned how easy it was to get autographs at 'The Aud'. After talking about the whole thing, we decided to do an autograph project. We wanted to get all of Team Canada's autographs on a Team Canada jersey. After finding a Canadian jersey, we went back to the arena, the next morning. This time we waited outside the dressing rooms, deep inside 'The Aud', 'til practice was finished...so we could ask players as they left their dressing room. One by one, they all came out, and signed for Corinna and I. Sidney Crosby came out last, because of interviews, and stopped to sign our jersey. It was then, I noticed how shy and soft-spoken he really is. He signed our jersey, and a few other people's things, but didn't really speak other than "You're welcome". Regardless, our project of getting Team Canada's autographs was completed in less than an hour! That team-signed jersey is framed, and is hanging on my wall today. It features a who's who of today NHL's young stars!

When it was all said and done, we recieved 2 autographs from Sidney Crosby over those 2 days, and had the previledge of seeing him play...wearing a Team Canada jersey! I'm incredibly thankful to Sid, for being kind enough to sign autographs those two mornings.

Here's our finished project;

Here's a close up of Sid's autograph (circa Dec. 2003)

Thanks for read, I'll write 'Part two' of "Crossing paths with Crosby" within the next 48 hours!

Chris

Ps- The second part will be even better!

Meeting the Cast & Director of "Pontypool"

Wednesday afternoon, I became aware of a screening of the Canadian thriller movie, Pontypool, at a local Guelph theatre. The special thing about this screening is that cast & director of this film were doing a Q&A following the showing of the movie, and following that...a meet and greet with the director and 3 actors!

The Canadian director, Bruce McDonald, (we went to same the high school, different times however) is known for directing "Roadkill", "Hard Core Logo", and "Picture Claire". He's also done some television work, directing "Degrassi; TNG", "Queer as Folk", and "ReGenesis". He has a strong cult-following in Canada, for his fantastic work.

The cast of Pontypool are Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, and Georgina Reilly, all of which were to be at this screening. Stephen McHattie, (Canadian) is the star of the film and is well-known throughout Hollywood. You may not know the name, but you will recognize his face! McHattie has appeared in several movies and tv shows. "300", "Watchmen", and "Seinfeld" just to name a few. Lisa Houle, McHattie's wife, co-stars in Pontypool, and has been in tv mostly. "Emily of New Moon", "Seinfeld", and "Due South" are some of her credits.

Houle & McHattie

Georgina Reilly is also in this movie. Her credits include "The Dark Room" and "Beautiful People".

So, around 5ish, after searching the internet for something to print off that would be suitable to have signed, since I didn't have the poster or book (that the movie is based on), I found an image that would be good to get signed. It's one of the movie posters for the film. So after a quick jump-drive image transfer, I was off to the local Walmart's photolab.

After body-checking my way to a print machine, I was able to print off my 8x10 of Pontypool. I swear to God, there are always people just hovering around those print machines, just to have somewhere to be! One person on the machine, 5 others watching what the one person is doing.

With my 8x10 in hand (5 bucks spent), I picked up my wife and we headed to the Bookshelf cinema to grab out tickets, before it sold out. It's not everyday Guelph gets a treat like this! With tickets in hand (20 bucks spent), we went to secure a couple of seats. There were alot of people in this indie theatre, but I hesitate to say it was a 'sell-out'. It was about 5 minutes before the start of the movie, when I went out to see what the candy-counter offered...with my 8x10 and Sharpie in tow, just in case! When I stepped out of the theatre, I saw Bruce "I always wear a cowboy hat" McDonald and Stephen McHattie talking to a couple of fans.

"Yes". All autograph seekers know the adrenline rush you get, when you see the celebrity you're looking for...is right there!

After patiently waiting for the conversation to end, I never interrupt, Stephen McHattie noticed me and I asked him for his autograph nicely. He obliged, coming over to me, and taking my Sharpie and 8x10. He looked at it for few seconds, not really recognizing what it was...I guess. At this time, I told him; "i thought you were great in '300'" which is true, as '300' is an all-time favorite of mine! He said thanks, and began to inscribe "All the best, Stephen McHattie". I wasn't sure why he hesitated to sign, I just figure he thought I would ask him to personalize it...but regardless, he signed it kindly and I was on my way on with this Pontypool picture!

After I thanked Stephen for signing my picture, I turned my attention to director Bruce McDonald, for his autograph. I asked him for his autograph, which he smiled and said "Sure" in response. I gave him my 8x10 and Sharpie, and he asked where I got this?

Now, most autograph seekers know, when most celebrities ask where did you get this? or what is this from?...means chances are, they're not going to sign the image because of various reasons. Most reasons include copyright issues...printing an image, without permission.

I responded to Bruce, by saying "It's one of 3 Pontypool posters I found today while searching Google, for something for you to sign". He thought it was cool, and talked about the other posters for the movie. I told him, that my wife and I chose this one because it was the only one without "blood"! We discussed the posters further, as he signed my 8x10...and drew a picture beside his autograph! How cool is that?!! I thanked him for his time, and for coming to Guelph for this screening. He, in turn, thanked me and asked me my name. After shaking hands with Bruce, I went back to the theatre to show my prize to Corinna...and to watch the movie!

After Corinna said that she knew what was taking me so long, a Bookshelf employee came into the theatre, and introduced Bruce McDonald and Stephen McHattie to the audience. I got kinda worried, as the 2 actresses who were supposed to attend, weren't there. McDonald spoke of the movie briefly, then said there will be a Q&A afterwards, and finally introduced his film. The film started.

It's good. Very good, in fact. I personally thought, it was going to be a 'zombie-horror' movie. It isn't. In my opinion, it's a intense pyschological thriller. McHattie and Houle are fantastic in it, and Reilly is intense in her demanding role. That's all I want to offer about the film itself, other than...see it, you'll thank me!

After the showing, an Bookshelf introduced Bruce McDonald and Stephen McHattie for the Q&A. Much to my delight, Lisa Houle and Georgina Reilly also appeared for the session!

"Yes", now I had the chance to get all of the cast on my 8x10...for this fantastic movie!

After an hour long Q&A session, in which I asked Bruce about how much freedom he gave his actors with "ad-libbing", the Bookshelf employee invited the attendees and cast into the Bookshelf's 'eBar' restaurant for drinks and conversion. How cool is that?!!

After moving into the eBar, Corinna said to try to get their autographs quickly, as it was getting late for us. I approached Lisa Houle first, and asked her for her autograph nicely. She responded wonderfully! I wish every celebrity was a great as she was! She looked at the picture, and like Stephen & Bruce prior, really checked it out before putting pen to paper! We chatted about the film, and where I got the picture of Pontypool...she was really personable about the whole thing! After giving me back my 8x10, she asked for it back...to write one of her lines from the movie on it! Beside her autograph, she wrote "Shut up or die!"...her character's great line in the climax of the movie! She also spoke of the sequel being in the works!

Simply awesome, that's all I can say about asking Lisa Houle for her autograph!

After thanking her, a million times, for her time...I decided to try to get Georgina Reilly's autograph, to complete the quartet of celebs in the house. The problem was this...a guy looked like he was carrying on a deep conversion with Georgina, that he wasn't going to let anyone interrupt...which is fine. So my wife and I sat down for about 5 minutes, before she reminded me of the late hour and to make my move! I approached Georgina, and thankfully her conversion ended (because of me? I'm not sure!) and I asked her for her autograph. He glowingly said yes, and did what the previously three did...check out my picture. She asked where it was from? And I told her about searching the internet, and she commented on how cool it was because of the images and wording, and asked if i thought it was her hand pictured in the 8x10! She then asked where i wanted her to sign it, then commented on how cool the other cast members autographs were! She then put pen to paper in my desired spot, and signed "George". She then turned to me and said "I signed George, because that's what everybody calls me!" Cool enough for me! I then thanked her for her autograph and her time, and went to find my wife...who was waiting to go home.

Corinna said "I really, really like it. It was better than what I thought was going be", meaning she hates zombie-movies, and this was far from a zombie-movie. She went on to say it was the best Canadian movie she's seen.

Me too.

The night was awesome, I really don't know whatelse to say! Other than thank you to the Bookshelf and their staff, Bruce McDonald, Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina 'George' Reilly, and to my wife (for doing this all, at the last possible minute).

Here's the Pontypool poster 8x10;

Thanks for the read,
Chris

PS- Since, the night was an 'intimate' session, with some drinks being had, Corinna and I decided not to ask for 'pictures with the cast'. So, there is personal pictures of the event.

PS the sequel- I'll be posting our experiences with Kevin 'Silent Bob' Smith in the next 24-48 hours!

Welcome to my first posting!

Hello readers!

This is going to be my forum, in which, I'll describe my autographing stories as they happen. I'll try to describe the celebrity's mood & interaction, the setting in which they're signing, and how I found out about the event.

I'll always try to post photos, and the item I got signed. Remember, although most celebrities will sign...taking a photograph is sometimes, a different story! Some events, just don't allow photographs to be taken.

I'll try to post a link to the website, that describes the event, and I'll describe any costs incurred.

I'm based in Guelph, Ontario, and my wife is my teammate for my autograph adventures. It's her trusting eyes, that've spotted celebrities at distance, that's lead to my biggest successes! She's also my voice of reason...whether it's a good time to ask for an autograph, or not!

Some of my biggest in-person autograph successes are; Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Mickey Mantle, Julianne Morre, Mark Ruffalo, Gordie Howe, Sidney Crosby, Ricky Williams, Alex Ovechkin, and Kevin Smith, just to spotlight a few.

I've also picked up three Prime Ministers; Stephen Harper, Jean Chretien, and Brian Mulroney, all of which were incredibly nice.

I hope that you'll enjoy my adventures & writings, and that you keep returning to see more updates!

Chris

Ps-I'll be posting a submission later tonight. If my internet connection allows it!
