The Future of the Franchise

For Phil and Aaliyah.

The Future of the Franchise

Every year the Toronto Maple Leafs, my favorite NHL team, are envolved in an "Rookie Tournament." At this tournament they invite 3 other NHL clubs to showcase their rookies and prospects in a round-robin tournament. Usually, the Ottawa Senators are guaranteed to be one of the other clubs. This year was no different, as the Sens, Boston Bruins, and Pittsburgh Penguins (Stanley Cup champions) all decided to showcase their youngsters with the Leafs.

Sounds pretty cool, eh? Here's the best part...it's all in Kitchener, basically in my backyard! SWEET!

In the past, I've gotten a few autographs at the games. Some would include Justin Pogge, John Ferguson Jr, Paul Maurice, Jiri Tlusty, and Dale Mitchell...just to name a few Leafs rookies and club management. The most shocking autograph of all would have to be, Mr George Armstrong. Now, that's a story! I'll lead with George's story...then get back into the true subject of the entry.

Corinna and I went to the Leafs camp; Senators rookie game, 3 years ago, and were watching the game. during the intermission...I went to work! I got photos with alot of former players and management types. Bryan Murray, Jacques Martin, and Craig Hartsburg, just to name a few. Walking around the Kitchener Auditorium (The Aud), we decided to poke our heads back into the ice area, from the concourse area, to see if the players had taken the ice. What I saw instead, was shocking.

A father and his very young son, approached the Hall of Fame, Maple Leafs legend, George 'Chief' Armstrong. The father said to his son, who Armstrong was, and George smiled. The father at that point asked George to sign his young son's Leafs jersey.

Now...

All true hockey autograph collectors know three things about the history of hockey signers.

1st- Bobby Orr only personalizes, if you're lucky enough to find him. This means he'll sign for you, but he'll put "To your name" on all his autographs, this is meant to deter the selling of his autograph.

2nd- Wayne Gretzky does NOT sign his 88/89 O-Pee-Chee and Topps hockey cards. These are the first cards of The Great One in his Kings uniform. He signed these cards for his children exclusively, and no one else. Trust me...I found that one out, the hard way.

3rd- George 'The Chief' Armstong, the captain of the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs, the last Leafs team to win the Stanley Cup, DOES NOT SIGN AUTOGRAPHS...period.

So, with those 3 bits of info...you're basically good to go in the world of collecting hockey autographs in person.

Back to Armstrong...

So, the father asks Armstrong to sign his son's Leafs jersey. The child couldn't be more than four...so he really had no clue who he was or what was going on, really! But, for the first time in my life...George Armstrong took a sharpie in his hand. In fact...he was cordial about it! I guess the father had no clue on Armstrong's signing habits (or lack there of)...and Armstrong liked this guy and his kid.

Before I continue...why doesn't Armstrong sign autographs?

Hmmm....

There are lots of theories and stories, but most come down to him being soured because a store was selling his autograph, back in the 1980's. In fact, apparently he threatened to sue the owner, claiming it was his signature and he didn't want that person to make money off of him...or something close to that. Well...that store ruined it for everybody. And I mean EVERYBODY. Back in 1992, when the Leafs went to the final 4...I approached him for an autograph, on a newspaper clipping, and was turned down. In fact, his autograph is so rare, most hard-core collectors haven't even seen one. Armstrong has turned down charities, paid signings, and even a 1967 reunion dinner...all because of his signing habits.

Well, my friends...Geroge Armstrong signed that child's jersey.

I saw it.

He bent down, and signed both his first and last name...every single letter. The father was very apprieciative, and thanked him.

...and I went to work.

I threw off my backpack, and reached deep inside its pocket searching for the only Toronto Maple Leafs collectable I had with me...a Leafs logo hockey puck. Telling Corinna, as fast a I humanly could on how rare this was, I reached for my sharpie...and approached the worst signer in NHL history. I quickly lifted my puck and sharpie towards George Armstrong, as the father and son departed, and spoke...

"Mr. Armstrong, could I get your autograph too?"

He looked at me for about 2 seconds, which TRULY seemed like an eternity, and his face changed. He went from smiling from his previously encounter, to thinking "oh great...a seller", and his face became very plain. He looked me over, and lifted his hand.

What you're about to read, most won't believe really happened.

George Armstrong, took my sharpie...then collected my puck, and quickly signed across the Leafs logo. He, as fast as he took it...handed it back to me, autographed.

To say I was shocked, would be the understatement of my life, to this point!

He truly wasn't happy that he signed it...I can remember that much, but that's about it.

I wish I could tell you that I told him thank you, or thanks, or that my dad loved your play, or that you mean so much to an entire generation of Leafs fans, or that you're the greatest captain in NHL history!

I wish I could tell you I said any of things! But I can't. I don't remember, what I said to him. That's how stunned I was that he signed for me.

Please understand how rare this is! I've gotten Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy, Crosby, Hull, Howe, Rocket...all the legends (minus Orr), and all of their autographs, no matter how rare...are available somewhere.

George Armstong's autograph is not.

But, I got it.

I remember showing Corinna, telling her how special this was...and then noticing the signature itself. Remember, I wrote he signed every letter, both first and last name for that child? Not so much for me. It's more of a "G Armstrong or G strong or Armstrong". Regardless...it's his autograph on my puck.

And no, it's not for sale.

So, with all that said...anything is possible, when it comes to autographs...just be ready for action!

Let's return to the main topic.

This year is no different. The Toronto Maple Leafs actually have a few rookies of note, going into this tournament. Christian Hanson, Tyler Bozak, '09 pick Jesse Blacker, 1st round pick Nazem Kadri, and the much hyped...goalie Jonas 'The Monster' Gustavsson...just to name a few rookies.

Another big draw, for me, is the chance to meet and; greet with various teams' upper brass. You see GM's, coaches, scouts, agents, and former players all make these games to watch and judge these players, just to see if they warrant an training camp invitation. With Pittsburgh in town, there's always the faint chance of Mario being there. And, how about Boston...how about 'number 4'? Truth be told...it would nearly impossible to get to them, IF...they made the trip to Kitchener. However, some Hall of Famers could be there, like former Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher, Uber-coach Scotty Bowman, and V-P Cam Neely.

All of which, would look great on my new Hockey Hall of Fame photo/project!

Plus, the chance of getting some prospects, on hockey pucks is always fun!

The Monday, of the long weekend, rolls around and game one is hours away. I gather up three Leafs pucks I have, my camera, and my Hockey Hall of Fame 16x20 photo. Corinna and I, head out to the Aud, about 2 hours before game time...without tickets.

Shouldn't be problem, I thought.

We arrived in Kitchener 10-15 minutes later, to find the lobby jammed full...just to get tickets. Damn it! Well, we got in the 150-175 people deep line-up. Of note, I had the chance to pre-buy tickets through Toyota...but of course, I don't bother. Meh.

Thankfully, the Aud had all the ticket booths open, and the line moved quicker than a snail. After baking in the lobby, we got our tickets and entered the ice area. Oh Canada finished up, and we finally sat down. I quickly noticed that half of the rink was blocked off for scouts, team management, and the media. The other half were Leafs fans, minus a dozen or so Bruins fans!

After the 1st period, 4 fights finished and the Bruins were up. I noticed that Jonas 'The Monster' Gustavsson, wasn't dressed, and was sitting the blocked off section with a few other scratched rookies. The intermission began, as the players left the ice, and I went to work. Corinna and I went to the blocked off area's entry way. You see, there is no exit to go outdoors in that area and more importantingly...no washroom! So, if anyone in that area wanted a smoke, decent signal for their cell, or to pee...they'd have to cross my path! Hehehe.

Well, it didn't take long as a former All-Star came out to use the facities. Waiting until he came out of the washroom, and was heading back to the blocked off area...I asked Kevin Stevens for a photograph with me. The two-time Stanley Cup winner, said 'sure'. He was dressed in a Pittsburgh Penguins track-suit, as he's scout for the reigning Cup champions. After the picture was taken by Corinna, I thanked him for his time and he seemed to be pleased that he was noticed.

Just a note about Kevin, on May 14, 1993, the Penguins were playing the New York Islanders in game seven of the Patrick Division Finals when Kevin Stevens suffered a terrible injury. Early in the first period, Stevens skated in and attempted to hit Islanders defenceman Rich Pilon, but instead was met by Pilon's visor which promptly knocked Stevens unconscious. He fell and hit the ice face first, and was unable to use his hands or arms to cushion the blow. Stevens then needed extensive reconstructive surgery on his face. Doctors cut an incision below his hairline from ear-to-ear, which was later closed with over 100 stitches, peeled back his skin and reassembled the bones in Stevens face with the use of metal plates. Stevens came back to have one more strong season for the Penguins in 1993–94 (41 goals, 47 assists), before being traded the next year.

His wife said, in a television interview afterwards, he looked better! His nose finally got corrected! Nice eh?!

After the interaction with Stevens, Corinna and I went back to our seats...after Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux failed to appear!

The game went back and forth, with the Leafs' Nazem Kadri and Christian Hanson dominating offensively. The game was incredibly physical, and the pressure of all the scouts et al, being in the house got the rookies fired up.

2nd intermission.

As the Leafs and Bruins left the ice, I quickly left the seating area, bound for the roped off area. I was hoping maybe 'the Monster' would step out for a moment or two! No such luck on Gustavsson...yet. However, as I was waiting, Claude Julien quietly appeared. The head coach of the Boston Bruins came out of the roped off area. He got into a conversation with a friend, before I made my move. Which was fine, as I realized...Corinna was still in the washroom!

She reappeared, with the trusty Fujifilm camera, and I told her what the situation was. I wanted my picture taken with the 'coach of the year' winner. She said sure, not really knowing who he was. I would quickly refresh her memory, as Coach Julien is a friend of a good friend of ours.

Claude Julien is a former Memorial Cup winning head coach. He won junior hockey most coveted prize with the Hull Olympics, of the QMJHL. That season, our good friend Shawn Camp was the assistant coach of the team. 'Camper' later went on to become the head coach of the Guelph Storm, and his wife (Kara), gave us tickets to our first date...which was a Storm pre-season game! That season, Shawn and his Storm, dominated the OHL...eventually winning the OHL Championship! They went to the Memorial Cup, but eventually fell the Kelowna Rockets who won it all that season. Corinna and I went to over 30 games that year, as we fell in love.

Now, with that bit of info out of the way...I reminded Corinna about Shawn and Claude's relationship. Immediately he face lit up, as she realized that the man who gave our friend a chance...was in front of us. She asked me, if I was going to mention 'Camper', but Coach Julien seemed pretty rushed, I said "maybe just the photo". After Claude Julien finished up, I moved up to him quickly, and asked the coach of the year winner for a picture. He nodded, and waved me around a corner. It seemed kinda strange, the way he did it.

I looked at Corinna, to ask her if I should go or not...as he walked away from me. She said "Ummm...is he going to take a picture with you?", I responded with "I'm not sure! Let's follow him!".

When I took the corner, he was standing there. He reached out for me and put his arm around me, to pose for the picture. Alright! "I just don't want other fans to rush me right now, but I don't mind taking a photo with you!" he spoke. Corinna got into position and said "Smile!"

After our shot, I thanked him for his time, and shook his hand. I wanted to scream GO LEAFS GO! into his face...but I just have alot of respect for the man...so I saved the immaturity and wished him well on the upcoming season. He was thankful, but gone in mere seconds, back into the 'Management Only' area. There went the man, who got our friend...a Memorial Cup Championship ring. Let me rephrase that...there went the man who got 'Camper' the job...'Camper' earned that ring.

After our encounter with the Bruins' bench boss, we went back to our seats.

Back and forth went the game. Leafs up. Bruins tie. Bruins up. Leafs tie. At the end of 60 minutes...5 -5 tie. Overtime, baby. After chances from both sides...Zach Hamill and (former Guelph Storm) Jamie Arniel moved in on the Leafs goalie. With a quick pass from Hamill, Arniel buried it fast...ending the game, in the Bruins favour.

Damn.

Now...off to work.

We quickly left the ice area, and went down into the bowels of the Aud, where the Leafs dressing & workout area was located.

We made it down as far as the barricaded off area, that leads directly from the ice surface into the dressing room. The only way a person would get in, without passing me, would be by coming off the ice directly. Sweet. That meant that all brass, media, agents, etc...would walk directly pass me.

Could Bobby Orr or Mario Lemieux be in the building? If they were...they would pass me! And trust me...I'd be on them like white on rice!

First along, was the man who I really wanted a photo with. Brian Burke is the new General Manager (and President) of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he was walking towards Corinna and I. With a quick nod to my beautiful wife, she knew who he was, and what I wanted. I saw her flick on the camera, as I approached the man who just drafted Nazem Kadri in the first round. Burke is apparently good to fans, taking time for photos and autographs...so I wasn't really worried, plus the fact it was just Corinna and I, was a bonus as no other fans were around. I asked him; "Brian, could I get a picture with you please?", he quickly stopped and said sure, and posed for Corinna with me. Done. This would be the 2nd photo with a Leafs GM for me, taken at the Aud. I got a photo with John Ferguson Jr, previously, when he was guiding the franchise. Afterwards, I thanked him, and he went inside the dressing room.

Just a few seconds after Burke left, the assistant coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs came along. I quickly gave the signal to Corinna, as Rob Zettler approached casually. Zettler is a former Leafs defenseman, who played in the NHL for 13 years with 6 teams. He was an original San Jose Shark, after being claimed by the new team from the Minnesota North Stars in the 1991 dispersal draft. I've met 'Zetts' once or twice, with him always being cordial and signing autographs. Today, however, I was just hoping for a quick photo with the former Memorial Cup player. I asked Rob for a photo with him, which he was happy to oblige. We stood together, as Corinna took our picture, and afterwards I wished him luck on the upcoming season with Toronto. Nice guy.

After Rob Zettler entered the Leafs' prospects private area, Things got a little tense for me.

Remember, I'm not actually there for photos with former players...I'm there for autographs of hot prospects and hall of famers (on my 16x20 project).

The Toronto Maple Leafs head coach was heading towards us. Ron Wilson, who is now into his 2nd season with the Leafs, was walking towards me...right behind him was Cliff Fletcher. Uh-oh.

I really wanted a photo with the Head Coach of the Leafs, as I've enjoyed his work...and hey...it's the coach of the Leafs!! But...Cliff Fletcher, former two-time General Manager, is an member of the Hall of Fame. So, I need his autograph on my project. Since they were basically together, I didn't want to stop them both...one for a photo...then the other for a photo and sutograph! So, I made an executive desicion, on the fly! I'd get fletcher, if he'd sign, and hope to Ron Wilson later in the day to try to get a photo.

Ron Wilson looked at me, as I approached him and Cliff Fletcher. I went to Fletcher immediatley, and spoke to the 'Silver Fox'. "Cliff, could I get your autograph, sir?". He stopped in his tracks, and said "Yes". As I reached for my Hall of Fame photo, and asked him "You're in the Hall of Fame aren't you?". He smiled and spoke "Yes, yes I am!" as he saw what I had for him to sign. I pulled the photo from it's protective casing, enough for him to autograph...while I also handed him my trusty blue Sharpie. Cliff took the photo, and went to work signing it. As he was signing it, one thought crossed my mind...this is the guy who he robbed Calgary, a team he managed to the Stanley Cup in 1988, for Doug Gilmour!. I wanted to say thanks for bringing 'Killer' to Toronto, and changing the face of the franchise forever...but, I didn't want to sound like a ravenous fan, and take all his time. When he finished, I thanked him for taking the time to sign my photo, and he said "You're welcome".

Cliff Fletcher, to me, will always be the best Leafs GM of my time. He managed the Leafs to consecutive final four appearances, brought us Doug Gilmour, Curtis Joseph, and Mats Sundin...just to name a few of his accomplishments. What you may not know about Fletcher, is the fact, in the late 90's, he signed Wayne Gretzky to a contract to play for the Leafs. Imagine...Gilmour, Sundin, and Gretzky as your centremen?!!! Anyways, Leafs ownership vetoed the contract, and the greatest player of all time, went to the New York Rangers instead.

True story. Sad, but true.

After Fletcher moved inside the private area, I noticed a former NHL player, who kept going in and out of the Leafs area.

Steve Smith is a former defenseman, who played for 15 years in the NHL, and more importantly won 3 Stanley Cups. However, he is not remembered in Edmonton or Calgary for that. Nor...do I remember him for that.

On April 30, 1986 (his 23rd birthday), Smith and the Oilers were playing in Game 7 of the Smythe Division Final against the arch-rival Calgary Flames. In the third period, with the score tied at two, he made a pass from behind his own net that inadvertently ricocheted off goaltender Grant Fuhr and into the Edmonton net. The Oilers never recovered and ultimately lost the series, while Calgary went on to the Stanley Cup Finals.

So, he did end up staying in Edmonton, and winning the Cup 3 times. However, in 1992 he moved to Chicago...and I met him in 1993, when he was still a Chicago Blackhawk.

I used to go to Maple Leaf Gardens, to try to get autographs every so often. One day, the Blackhawks were in town...so I figured it would nice to meet some good players. Chicago had Jeremy Roenick, Ed Belfour, Chris Chelios, and former Oiler Steve Smith. As I waited for players to enter the Gardens, they all signed autographs upon arrival. Roenick was fantastic with fans, signing everything you had for him. Belfour was very quiet, and preffered to sign for fans wearing Chicago clothing...but still signed. Chelios, was a different dude. Some days he signed cards, saying no photos. Other days, no photos...only cards with him a Hawks jersey. Some days...no cards or photos, only pucks. Chelios really kept collectors on their toes! But, on that day...he signed my photo! Then, the 3 time Cup winner, Steve Smith showed up. When I asked him to sign my (only) card, he said no. When another collector presented a photo...no also. When a puck was put in front of him...negative. It wasn't like he ran in, he stopped and talked to us collectors! He finally commented that he didn't sign because his son, asked him not too.

Right.

Truth is, Smith was worried that most autograph collectors in Toronto, were sellers of autographs. Which is fine, and most likely true for him to think that way. But, here is the hard truth...Smith's autograph, even then, has/had no real value. There aren't too many people who collected defenseman autographs...even fewer who collect playes with an infamous 'own goal' on their resume.

However, he was open and approachable about it. One kid, went to him with a sheet of paper, and asked for a signature. This time, he signed. I guess, he figured nobody would but a sheet of autographed paper, if this kid sold it. I think he was right.

Anyways, I don't think in all my time at the Gardens, I ever did get a Steve Smith autograph...but like I said, I did see him sign one.

Now, fast forward 16 years later, here he was again...in front of me. I instantly reconigized him, as I am a former Oiler fan, and remembered his signing habits...or lack there of. I knew he didn't work for the Leafs, but I was sure who he worked for a club, as he was carrying around an attache case. I gave the nod to Corinna, she got the camera ready. I approached Steve Smith, for the first time in 16 years, and this time...asked for a picture with the man. He seemed a little surprised to be reconigized, and quietly said...yes.

He stood beside me, and we posed for a photograph together. He was very nice about it, afterwards saying thanks to me! I wonder if I had a card that day, if he would of signed it...being away from being hounded all the time? Well, I'm not sure, but he was very gracious that day...and I kind of think he would of.

After Smith, Corinna and I figured all the Leafs brass, were inside and that there really was nobody else to come along. So we left that area, and went to the team bus area...hoping to get a few hot prospects autographs, and maybe a Hall of Famer!

When we leaving we ran into the other Leafs assistant coach, Tim Hunter, outside. There were a few collectors there, whom he was signing for. I figured since I asked Zettler for a photo, I ask that other assistant for a photo too!

Tim Hunter is a legendary NHL tough guy. He fought with all the heavyweights in his day. No fear. He led the NHL in penalty minutes twice! First in 86/87 with 361 minutes, and finally in 88/89 with 375 minutes. He was with Calgary for those seasons. He currently ranks 8th on the NHL's all-time penalty minute leaders list with 3,142. That's more penalty minutes than Gretzky has points! His play served his team well, the Calgary Flames, as they won the Stanley Cup in 1988.

I approached Hunter, in the Aud's parking lot, after he finished signing autographs for some collectors. I asked him if I could get a picture with him, and he was more than willing to agree! Corinna took our photo, and I thanked him for his time.

We continued to where the Toronto Maple Leafs team bus was parked, waiting for the prospects to emerge from the Aud, to take them back to the their hotel. When we walked around to where the bus was, we found a couple of collectors waiting for the prospects too. I gathered out my 3 Maple Leafs pucks to be autographed, and discussed with Corinna, whom I hoped to have sign them.

We agreed on the three hot Leafs prospects. We chose Nazem Kadri, Christian Hanson, and Jonas Gustavsson. Since they would have to pass us, and the two other collectors, to board the bus...I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to acquire their autographs. Hopefully, I could get a photo with each also.

First out of the Aud, was the 2009 1st round pick by the Leafs...Nazem Kadri.

Nazem Kadri is a player of Lebanese descent who was drafted seventh overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Nazem played in the OHL for the Kitchener Rangers and the London Knights. He is considered a top prospect and a top player in the future. Nazem is the second player of Lebanese descent to be drafted in the NHL. On July 6, 2009, Kadri signed a 3-year entry level contract with the Maple Leafs.

The two other collectors approached Kadri first, and he happily signed their photos! Once, he finished with them, I asked him for an autograph also. He kindly signed my Leafs puck, and handed it back to me, smiling. I asked him if it would be okay to have a picture with him, which he said sure and threw his arm around me! Corinna got our camera, and took our picture together. Afterwards, I thanked him, and congratulated him on the recent draft...which he smiled ear to ear, saying thanks! You could tell, he was drafted by his favourite team! That's always a bonus, for any hockey player!

Once my interaction with Kadri, who was just sent back to the OHL as I write this, was finished...we went inside the atrium of the Aud, to meet the players, instead of being outside in the heat. After a few other prospects left (Jesse Blacker and Kenny Ryan) we spotted another prospect that we wanted to meet.

Last March, there was two hot undrafted prospects that every team in the NHL were coveting. Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson, both of the NCAA hockey league, were making a name for themselves, and the NHL had taken notice. Toronto's GM, Brian Burke, was incredibly agressive in his pursuit of both these propects. Incredibly Burke signed not one...but both of these young university players, which pleased many Leaf fans. With a weaker line-up, Burke basically promised these two players, that they would a very strong chance of playing in the NHL quickly. That was a promise that had kept. When the NCAA season finished, both Hanson and Bozak made appearances in the NHL, wearing the blue & white.

Playing in just his third NHL game, Christian Hanson scored his first goal in the Maple Leafs' 4-1 win in New Jersey on Tuesday night. He also spent his first two minutes in the penalty box, going plus-1 with two shots on goal. An impressive start for the son of the famous 'Slap-shot' star, Dave Hanson. Hanson played in 5 games for the Leafs, scoring a goal and adding an assist.

As Christian Hanson was approaching us, bound for the team bus, I signaled to Corinna to take a picture of him signing for me. I asked Hanson for an autograph, before the other 2 collectors did, on my 2nd Maple Leafs puck.

Remember what I said about players, who were concerned about people selling their autographs? The way they try to prevent the selling of their autographs, is simply by personalizing the autograph...by adding an "To (your name), All the best/Best wishes, Their name". It does work, in the prevention of selling of their signatures, but like I've said many times...I don't sell autographs.

I just asked Christian Hanson, veteran of just 5 NHL games, for his autograph on my 2nd of 3 pucks (I had), and he replied; "Sure, what's your name?".

To say I was surprised, would be an understatement.

The last time an unproven telent demanded a personalization of their autograph, was John Tavares. A true legend in his own mind. That's all have to say about him. However, JT, did have reason to personalize...his autograph was in great demand on eBay et al...because he was the "next can't miss prospect", and everybody wanted a piece of him. However, he is not very approachable, and will often say no...or change his signature. I just don't like him.

Anyways, Christian Hanson, as coveted as he was...is no John Tavares. His autograph, while desired by some Leafs fans, isn't in high demand across the NHL. So, when he asked for my name, I was taken aback by his request.

Now, don't get me wrong...he was very nice, and didn't hesitate to sign for me...I guess he's not a fan of people selling his autograph, for whatever personal reason. I really wanted his autograph, as I feel he could become a solid 2nd line player for years to come, I told him my name was Esteban Carlos Sanchez.

Just kidding folks! Just seeing if you're still paying attention!

I said my name was Chris, and he quickly went to work signing my puck. "To Chris, Christian Hanson". Actually, it looks pretty good! I don't mind personalizations, I just prefer to ask for it, instead of it being forced on me...and my item. Regardless, I just recieved Hanson's autograph...and was happy to have it!

Hanson signed for the 2 other collectors, who were clearly autograph sellers, and personalized their photos too. Well done, Christian. Just a quick note...Hanson has been sent to the Marlies to begin the 09/10 season.

Corinna asked if I wanted a posed photo with Hanson, and decided to pass...as he was basically walking out the doors when she asked. She mentioned that she got a photo of us, when he was signing...and I was content with that photo, after she showed it to me.

Two pucks signed, one to go.

The last one was for the Monster.

As much popularity there was around the courting and eventual signing of Bozak and Hanson, they paled in the comparison to the courting of Jonas 'the Monster' Gustavsson.

In late June, there was four NHL teams who wanted to sign the best undrafted goaltender on the planet. Jonas Gustavsson, had somehow, gone undrafted into the NHL and was playing in the Swedish Elite League for Färjestads BK. He just finished a 42 game season and put up an incredible 1.96 GAA. He led Färjestads BK into the SEL playoffs, putting up a shocking 1.03 GAA with 5 shutouts! His save percentage was .961...simply dominating shooters. This is why Toronto, Dallas, San Jose, and Colorado all made contract offers to Gustavsson.

'The Monster' chose Toronto, because he felt they would put him in the NHL immediately as the back-up to Vesa Toskala...giving Gustavsson a chance to unseat the number one, if he plays well enough...so he could quickly become the starter of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I'm sure Brian Burke used that strategy, in signing Gustavsson, on July 7th, 2009.

When Corinna and I were talking about Christian Hanson personalizing my puck, one of the other collectors interupted us by asking; "Is that Gustavsson?"

I turned to look in that direction, and said yes.

Coming towards us, was the hype. And he was a monster! Jonas Gustavsson is 6'3", but doesn't seem that big, until he's beside you. His nickname might be 'the Monster', but he is very approachable looking and seems like a nice guy! But being 6'3" and almost 200 lbs, when he's got his goalie equipement on and is on skates...he's a huge monster in front of the net!

I went to Gustavsson first, and asked him for an autograph. He quietly said sure, and took my puck, and autographed it nicely. When he handed it back, I asked him if it was okay to get a picture with him? He agreed, and posed for a picture with me, as Corinna took our photo. I was very happy to have met the much-hype goaltender, and to be successful in acquiring his signature!

Afterwards, the two other collectors got autographs from Gustavsson. At final count, Gustavsson signed 8 autographs for them...no problem. Greedy much? I was quite happy with my puck, and I'm sure they were happy with their signed photos...which you could probably find on eBay for the nice price of 20 dollars! Seriously though, Gustavsson seemed to have no problem signing multiple autographs for them...something that will probably end quickly playing in Toronto.

I felt pretty good with the day's events. Pictures with some hockey greats, one Hall of Famer's autograph, 3 can't miss prospects' autographs, and one heck of a hockey game...all 15 minutes from home!

I looked at Corinna, and she looked at me...tired. My beautiful wife asked me; "Are we done, now?".

"Yes", I answered.

Thanks for the long read, hope you enjoyed it.

PS- There is a variety of signings coming, I should be blogging the experiences...if they're worth a story!

With a Mario Lemieux signing coming...you can expect that blog shortly after!

I plan on showing a 'highlight' or 'top 10 list' of my greatest successes, since I get asked often "What's your best autograph?"...that'll happen one of these days.

Keep checking in.

3 Signings...2 Days...all free! Part 3 of 3; A New Project.

Apologies.

Apologies for the delay in wrapping up this trilogy, of stories. Let me explain. I got called back to work (the NEW largest automotive manufacturer on Earth, no it isn't GM folks), began shift work, worked late, overtime began, worked overtime...long story short...work + family - sleep = no blog entry!

Regardless, I'm back onto a steady routine, which means I can write again, for your viewing pleasure!

For those who aren't really familiar with this current 3-parter, go back and skim over part 2...it'll lead you nicely into this conclusion.

Again, sorry for the delay.

A New Project

As I mentioned in my last entry, this adventure would feature a Toronto Maple Leafs' legend. I wouldn't go as far as say he's a NHL legend, as I reserve that handle for "The Rocket", "The Great One", "Mr. Hockey", "Le Gros Bill", and finally "Number 4".

Now let's talk true Leafs legends. Johnny Bower. Turk Broda. Terry Sawchuk. The three greatest goaltenders in Leafs history. Frank Mahovlich, Charlie Conacher, Dave Keon, Syl Apps, Teeder Kennedy, Ace Bailey, and George Armstrong. Seven of the greatest forwards in Leafs history. Four of the greatest Leafs defensemen would include Borje Salming, King Clancy, Bill Barilko, and Tim Horton. I would be ticking off alot of people if I didn't mention the modern day Leaf legends in Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour.

However, if you noticed...I failed to mention one of the most popular Toronto Maple Leafs of all time. He's also a Hall of Famer. Also, he holds one of the most difficult NHL records that exist.

Figured it out?

Number 27, in your programs.

Number 1, in your hearts.

Ladies and gentlemen, this installment of "Chris' Autograph Adventures" features, the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf of the 1970's;

Darryl Sittler.

'Betcha forgot about him, didn't cha?!

Alrighty, let's get to the story.

After getting Steve Mason's autograph, Corinna and I left Kitchener/Waterloo heading back to Guelph. However, if you can remember...I had to return to Wal-mart to pick up an 2nd photo, that I was printing.

This is where the "new project" term comes into play.

A few weeks prior, Corinna and I were in AJ's Sportsworld browsing, when she spotted a 16x20 photograph of the Hockey Hall of Fame. She showed me, mentioning that it was cool and wouldn't it be interesting to get Hall of Fame inductess to sign it? I agreed that it was a great idea, however I followed with; I need another project, like I need another hole in the head! Basically, it just came down to simple economics...laid off = no money for photo/project. However, her idea...stuck.

Another point I failed to mention was the price of the photo...30 dollars to call it your own. Even if I was working, 30 dollars for an 16x20 of the Hall, was too much for me to stomach. I was acutally a little ticked that AJ's would ask that much. Needless to say, we left without the photo.

The week leading into the weekend of freebies, I was tipped off that Darryl Sittler was going to be appearing the Mohawk Racetrack, the night of the Maple Leaf Trot. The MLT is a prestigious horse race, that happens once a year at this world famous racetrack. The news was, Sittler was going to be signing autographs for an hour, at the track, to help promote the big race...which apparently has nothing to do with the Toronto Maple Leafs (just a head's up!).

As I thought about getting Sittler's signature, two things went through my mind. What to get signed...and more importantly, how in the world can I ask Corinna to go to two signings in one day?!!

Acutally...truth be told, the Corinna part wasn't the toughy after all. Mentioning the signing was close to home, and more importantly at the track, caused my wife to raise an eyebrow in interest! You see...good ol' Corinna had never been to a horse race before, and saw the autograph signing as a chance to finally see a horse run in circle and gamble on it! Like my perspective on the ponies?!

But seriously, the idea of an evening at Mohawk watching the trotters was appealing. It's been a long time since I was at a horse race, so I figured...2 birds, 1 stone.

Now the Sittler part of the equation...(here come my famous line) what to get signed?

I'll get to that, in a minute.

Now, Sittler is very important to me, as he owns an extremely difficult NHL record...which I respect immensely.

When Toronto Maple Leafs captain Darryl Sittler went to work on Feb. 7, 1976, he didn't plan on making history. But with an amazing seven points as the second period ended, Sittler was one point shy of tying the NHL record. He magically slid the puck into the net three more times, scoring Sittler a record that even Gretzky couldn't break. 10 incredible points in one game.

10 POINTS IN ONE GAME!

Want to know how difficult this record is?

The closest anyone has come is 8 points. 2 points away from just tying Sittler's record. Wondering about the players who got close with 8 points? They're an actual who's who of hockey history. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard, Bryan Trottier (one of my late father's favorite players), Mario Lemieux, and Wayne Gretzky (My favourite). Actually Mario and Wayne tried multiple times...Gretzky scored 8 twice and Lemieux scored 8 three times...always falling short of Darryl Sittler's 10 point magical night.

One more thing about Sittler's record. The Leafs won that game 11 to 4, over the Boston Bruins. The coach of the Bruins that night? Maybe you've heard of him. It was Don Cherry. You can argue Boston was lacking their best player that night, Bobby Orr, but Sittler was on fire...it's doubtful that Orr could of stopped Sittler scoring 6 goals and adding 4 assists.

Back to the story.

What was I going to get signed?

I thought of a puck. Nope, actually I had one signed a few years back (free). His McFarlane figure? Good idea...but hard to find. I really didn't know where to start to look for his figure. Then Corinna mentioned the Hall of Fame photo. I quickly shot it down, reminding her of the 30 bucks, and gas just to get to Woodbridge and back. Then she said, whynot find one online and see if you can print it off?

My wife ladies and gentlemen. Genious, pure genious. Back off, she's all mine!

Instantly I was searching the big search engines online, and found an extremely large picture of the Hall, which was beautifully photographed. YES!

I saved the (gigantic) image, and downloaded it to my jumpdrive.

Insert story 2 here...and the Steve Mason photo.

The Saturday rolls around, rather quickly, and we were driving back from K/W to Guelph's Walmart to pick-up my new photo.

I walked (back) into Walmart, presented my photo ticket, and was given the price for my new 16x20 of the Hockey Hall of Fame...$16 dollars.

$16 DOLLARS!

That's a savings of $14 bucks...not to mention the gas saved!

Call me cheap, but I prefer to be called smart.

After picking up the Hall photo, we went home. It was about 1pm, and Sittler's signing was to commence at 6pm. Corinna took a nap, and admired my free Mason autographs!

Around 5:30, we left for Mohawk, which is about 15 minutes away. Remember...I always try to support signings close to home, so the fact I was driving 15 minutes, instead of 50 minutes, had us both smiling in our Highlander!

When we arrived, we noticed it was family day at the track. Pony rides, face painting, meeting local policemen, etc... All the sort of thing, my 11 year old son, wouldn't consider family-ish!!

We went into the main lobby of Mohawk, and found a line-up of about 50-60 people waiting for autographs. The good news was, Darryl Sittler was already here and was signing.

Wait...it get's better!

Like the 2 previous "3 Signings...2 Days...all free!" stories, there is a free 8x10! YES! Mohawk was offering up a free potrait of Sittler, in his glory days with the Leafs, to all comers! Rules were simple 1 autographed photo, and 1 more item...if you had one.

I noticed most people in line, were just people who just stumbled up on the signing and decided to meet Sittler. There were a few "regulars" and even 2 or 3 people who attended the Steve Mason signing from earlier in the day.

The line was moving slowly. I noticed that Sittler was kind of bothered by that, because he kind of rushed people through after he signed their item(s). He eventually asked staff to close off the line...as he had to attend a photoshoot for the MLT race.

Don't worry readers...I wasn't near the end of the line! ;)

When we approached the signing table, Corinna said that she was going to stand off to the side to take pictures, to document the interaction with Sittler and I. Isn't she great?

It was finally my turn, and I went up and greeted the Toronto Maple Leaf Legend. I proudly showed him my new 16x20 of the Hall, which he looked at and asked where he should sign it. I pointed to the right side of the image, which he signed and nicely added his Hall of Fame inscription; "H.H.O.F. 1989". AWESOME! Normally, you have to ask for that inscription, and sometimes even have to pay...which he did, without asking...whatsoever!

Oh yeah...the free 8x10! I was so happy with my 16x20, that I forgot about the freebie! Corinna spoke up and said, Chris ask him to sign the other picture! Whipping back to reality, I asked Sittler to sign the 8x10, which he quickly did. As he signed it, I asked if I could get a photo with him? He responded with a yes, and I joined him for a posed picture. After Corinna took our picure, I shook his hand, thanked him for his time, and began a new project...to collect Hockey Hall of Famers' autographs on my beautiful picture!

After the signing, Corinna and I put our new items (and camera) in our truck, and went back inside Mohawk.

We went to a free "how to seminar" on betting on horses, which was incredibly informational to us. Afterwards, we went and checked out the ponies. We did ok. Welllllllllllll...Corinna did great, I did...just ok.

That's my girl!

Well, this brings an end to my three parter. I hoped you enjoyed it.

I'll be back soon with another autograph adventure, keep checking in!

Chris

UPDATE

Autograph numero deux, has been added my Hall of Fame photo! This past weekend, Corinna and I attended a signing at AJ's Sportsworld (ironic?). Detroit Red Wings' legend "Terrible" Ted Lindsay. Ted was full of great stories, taking time with each person in line individually. That's something that should be respected by each person who meets this gentleman.

He, unlike other signers, doesn't rush his time with people. He added his signature to the left of Sittler, mentioning he wanted to be in the centre of my picture! AWESOME! If you even have the chance to meet Ted Lindsay, do it...and ask him about the time lifted his "machine gun" in Maple Leaf Gardens!

2 down...more than 200 to go. Yay.

3 Signings...2 Days...all free! Part 2 of 3; NBA 1st Rounder or NHL Rookie of the Year?

Hello!

As you know, I'm currently writing about 3 signings that I attended over the span of 2 days...that were all free! I hoped you enjoyed my Camilo Villegas autograph adventure! Now, let's get moving to the next chapter.

NBA 1st Rounder or NHL Rookie of the Year?

For over a month, I was checking the 'Rogers/NBA 3 on 3 Challenge' webpage for any autograph news. It's a tournament, that takes place in major cities across Canada, for basketball amateurs...aka "street-ballers". The Toronto stop was coming up, and the webpage promised a NBA player, or two, to appear at the tournament.

This was good news for me, as I currently own an unsigned basketball that I purchased for Chris Bosh to sign. The only problem was...Bosh didn't make the signing, leaving me with a basketball that I purchased on the way to the signing! Not to mention a couple of 8x10's too, but that's a story for another day. Bosh does make appearances in Toronto often, so I'm not too worried about the 8x10's.

Back to the story.

A couple days prior to the Toronto tourney, the website said that the player scheduled to appear would be the Toronto Raptors 2009 1st round pick, DeMar DeRozan. I thought this was terrific news! I have the chance to get the 9th overall pick, before he becomes an NBA superstar on my basketball...for free! Awesome! He was scheduled to sign from 10:30am to 11:30am, at the CNE grounds, where the 3 on 3 tournament was being held. I was afternoons that week, which meant very little sleep Friday night going into Saturday morning. I'd have to be up, ready, and on the road by 9:15am to get to downtown Toronto on time, safely. After talking to Corinna about my plans for Saturday, I got the green light to go!

Then things changed for me...drastically.

Friday afternoon rolled around, and I was checking my regular autograph-news websites when I came across some potential weekend changing information!

The 2009 NHL Rookie of the Year, Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets, was going to be appearing in Kitchener for a free signing...at the same time as DeRozan in Toronto!

WHAT TO DO?!

Let me explain a few things here; Firstly, Mason just finished doing a public signing, a few weeks back, at Frameworth (a Toronto autograph/collectables shop) for $25.00 an autograph...which isn't a bad price at all for an Rookie of the Year Award Winner. The chance to get him...for free...was tempting to say the least. Secondly, Kitchener, Ontario is a city that neighbours my city of Guelph. Actually, the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph could merge one day to become one mega-city, they're all so close to eachother! So, when the chance to get an autograph within my city limits occurs, I (usually) jump at the chance. Not only just to gain an autograph, but to support local businesses in hopes that they'll bring in another signing!

Steve Mason was to sign autographs at "Sportzone", a sports equipment retailer, for their grand re-opening Saturday morning, starting at 11am. Sportzone is exactly 24 km's from my house, whereas the CNE is exactly 90 kms.

10 minutes or 1 hour?

Goalie or Guard?

After stressing for about 15 minutes, I chose.

DeMar DeRozan...another time.

The fact that Mason was around the corner, made the decision for me. I'll have to get that basketball signed, yet another time! Now, the tough part...what to get signed...on such short notice?!!

I realized that there was no way for me to travel to Frameworth, Frozen Pond, or AJ's Sportworld to see if they had 8x10's of Mason...as I had to be at work in about 1 hour...leaving only Saturday morning available to get something done! None of those stores weren't going to be open in time for me to get back to Kitchener for the signing in time. The tough part about Guelph, being a autograph collector, is that there really is no place in town for supplies.

Then, I had an idea. I would have to print off my own photo of Mason. I would of liked to have had a puck, but like I said...short notice was killing my preferences. I went to Google, and looked at the images of Steve Mason the website had to offer. The good news was...I really liked one picture, that luckily enough, was large enough to print off! I saved the image to my computer, and loaded it on my 'jump drive'. Then...off to Toyota, to make Corolla's & Matrix's I went.

Saturday morning, I got up, showered, and got ready to roll. I decided to got to Walmart to print off my Steve Mason 8x10 AND another photo of something...that you'll find out about in Chapter 3 of this 3 parter! Like the suspense I just created?! After Corinna decided to join me, we were off to Walmart, and then the neighbourhood autograph signing! The time was 9:30am.

We entered Walmart, went into the photolab, and I was surprised that no one was using the photo machines! Ususally, when I want to print something off quickly, there is a bunch of people trying to print off their vacation photos! I used the instant printer, and printed off the Mason photo. I also put in an order the my "other" photo. After paying for both images, we were on our way to Sportzone...my stomach had other ideas though!

After a detour, for a quick bite, we finally got headed in the right direction! A hungry man, is a irritable man!

We arrived at Sportzone around 10:45ish. When we approached the front doors, we noticed that Bauer hockey had a display booth set up outside their front doors, and was showing off new products. Another time, I thought, walking by. Then a family walked out, with their autographed items...he was here already, and signing early! Awesome! I couldn't tell you how many times I've waited (and waited) for celebrities to show up super-late...I'm looking at you Jaromir Jagr and Dominik Hasek!

We entered this sports-superstore, and were impressed by the size of it. It really reminded me of "National Sports", if you know who they are. I walked up to the line, and sized it up. We were about 40-50 people deep, with most being families in front of us. I noticed one or two regulars...guys who go to every single signing, regardless of it's price or location. I wonder if these guys actually work?!

I mentioned to Corinna, that I wanted to take a looksy at the signing table to see what was going on. After she said yes, I walked towards the front of the line, checking out the people, and scanning what they had to get signed by Mason. There was a few people that had his OHL team jerseys, both the Kitchener Rangers and the (hated) London Knights. There was some Columbus Blue Jackets items, but not too plentiful. I guess the short notice bug, just didn't bite me in the butt!

The store had 2 shooting cages, much like a batting cage, but with a hockey net for people to try out potential hockey sticks and such. At the far end of the one shooting cage, was the signing table with Steve Mason and a Sportzone employee, who was directing traffic. I noticed to the right of Mason, was a stack of 8x10's. Were they free?! I watched the next family go up to meet and greet with Steve Mason. They handed him their jersey, which he signed. Mason then turned, took a couple of the 8x10's and autographed them for everyone there. Yep, they were free. YES!

Excited, I went back to Corinna and told her the good news. I asked her to verify my claim...just to make sure that it wasn't just for kids, that it was indeed for everybody. She went and checked out the surroundings, and came back with a positive response. It looks like another free 8x10! First Camilo Villegas, up and coming star in the PGA...now, Steve Mason, up and coming star in the NHL!

Now, the waiting game. Stupid lines!

After about 20 minutes or so, we were next in line. After the family in front of us, vacated the shooting cage, we were up. Corinna and I walked into the shooting cage.

Corinna trailed behind me, ready with our camera, to document this autograph adventure. I approached Steve Mason, and spoke; "Hi Steve, how ya doing?". He replied with "Good, you?". I was good also, and I handed him my Walmart printed photo, and asked him to sign it. I heard Corinna take a shot.

While he signed my photo, I asked him to add his "Rookie of the Year" inscription. Adding this inscription, generally adds value to it, as it's usually a rare item to be found beneath an autograph. Now, usually most players, who've won the award, will inscribe the following..."ROY 2009 or ROY '09". It's just the abbreviation with the year they won the prestigious award. Steve Mason did one better! He actually took the time, and wrote out "Rookie of the Year" entirely! A rare feat!

I was very appreciative of that inscription. I asked him if he could sign one of the giveaway 8x10's for my wife and I, which he did kindly. As he signed this one, I asked if it was okay to have a picture with him? He said sure! Walking behind the signing table, I joined Steve Mason, and Corinna took our posed picture. Afterwards, I shook his hand and thanked him for his time.

All said and done, passing on the Raptors first round pick, for the NHL's Rookie of the Year...was a good move.

We took a walk around the store, to see what the had to offer. This store was a complete sports store, covering almost all sports! We were impressed. Leaving the store, we saw that the Bauer set up, was still there. We took a good look at their offerings, and we were given a couple of free Bauer water bottles!

Man, was this our day...or what?!

Well, readers, that's it for chapter 2. Another free signing, another free 8x10, thank you very much!

Please come back this weekend, as I'll finish up the 3 parter, with the finale. Want a hint on who it is? Here's clue...He's a Toronto Maple Leaf legend.

Take care,
C.

3 signings...2 days...all free! Part 1 of 3; Following the 13th best golfer on Earth!

I'm back with more autograph adventures!

Just a quick note about the upcoming writings; I recently went to 3 signings over 2 days, and I'm going to present them individually for your viewing pleasure...in my long-winded style! I hope you enjoy this one, and the others to follow.

Chapter one; Following the 13th best golfer on Earth!

Camilo Villegas.

Ever heard of him? Probably not.

Tiger Woods? Of course, he's arguably the most famous athlete on the planet today.

Here's the kicker. Tiger Woods is number 1, in the World Golf Rankings, Camilo Villegas is only 12 spots behind him. Trust me when I say this...he will be great.

CV is only 27, and has won 2 PGA tournaments in the last 10 months. He won the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship tournaments...back to back, last September. Very impressive. Past winners of the Tour Championship include Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, Vijay Singh, and Mike Weir...just to list some of the impressive company. The young Colombian, was also named in People's 'Hottest Bachelors" in 2006...so to say he has a following, would be an understatement.

Let's begin.

A month or so ago, I was checking a few sites, when I found out that I missed 2 autograph signings at Golf Town. Golf Town is a large golf equipment & clothing chain across Canada. I was kind of disapointed, as I've never gotten a pro-golfer's autograph before, and wanted to expand my collection into that sport. So I saved Golf Town to my internet favourties, and checked their website frequently for any events.

2 weeks ago, they updated their site...and this time, I got the news early.

Camilo Villegas was coming to Golf Town's Mississauga, Ontario location for an Q&A session, followed by an autograph signing. The drawback was it limited to only 100 people. Another drawback was the time of the signing itself. It was to start at 3pm. I live about 45 minutes, on a good day away in Guelph...and I started work on the assembly line at 5:45pm! If it went late and/or traffic was bad...I'd be late for work!

Was it worth the risk? I needed to think about it. And think about it, I did. The weekend leading into the Tuesday that the signing was on, I was still very undecided. The normal concerns went through my mind, other than the time frame issues, what to get signed? is there a limit? and, is it worth it?

That weekend, I did some investigating into CV himself. The fact he won 2 tournaments, signed by Cobra Golf, and is the 13th ranked player...all intrigued me. I went to eBay to see if his autograph was out there for viewing and for sale. Stupid me...everybody's autograph is for sale on eBay! However, I did see a few autographs, and his looked pretty cool.

So, I decided to give it a try, and go for it.

Now, what to get signed? The website mentioned that free photos would be distributed to the 100 people who made it early enough. That would be nice, but I was hoping for something a touch more different, since he would be the 1st PGA pro I've gotten an autograph from. I thought about getting a pin flag, very popular amongst golf autograph seekers. But I felt, it could be a little difficult acquiring, in my neck of the woods. I also thought of an "Cobra" hat, the company who sponsors him on the tour. But what if he made the jump to Nike, next year? Would anyone ever remember him with Cobra? It's like legendary NHL goalie Tony Esposito, anyone ever remember he won a Stanley cup with Montreal?! No, just that he played 15 years for the Chicago Blackhawks!

Like how I threw in a hockey reference?

Back to the story, after talking about it with Corinna, I decided to go with a piece of equipment, he (probably) never change...his preferred golf ball. You see golfers, are creatures of habit. Getting them to change anything, in their arsenal, is very difficult. Remember, this is their livelihood here!

CV uses the Titleist Pro V1. A ball that's available to anyone, meaning it's not just for the pros.

I figured Golf Town would have them for sale, so I banked on that...and would go to the signing EMPTY HANDED.

Tuesday morning, I got up and get ready for the signing...and for work. Time, as always, was going to be a major factor today. I was leaving home, hoping both traffic and the weather be good to me. Well...not so much. The skies were very dark, and the clouds looks incredibly saturated! However, the rain was holding off. Traffic was heavy, but moving very well. Arriving an hour early, I liked my chances of gaining the autograph. As I hopped out of my Highlander, the skies began to open. At least I got here quickly!

Entering Golf Town, I quickly walked into the registeration area for the Camilo Villegas Q&A and autograph signing. After filling out an entry contest ballot, I was given an (FREE) autograph ticket and (FREE) 8x10 of Villegas, with a Cobra logo on it. Actually the photo was pretty cool looking. Normally freebie photos are just a photocopy of a picture, in black and white...however this picture was a original print, and looked great! The ticket I was given entitled me to get an additional item signed...that would have to be purchased in store.

What a coincidence! I wanted to purchase golf balls to get signed! Anyways, I found a sleeve of the balls I wanted to purchase. By the way, a sleeve of balls is the term used for buying just '3' new balls...just a head's up! Afterwards, I walked around the massive store, killing time, checking out their sales and such. I finally made my way over to the signing area, where Golf Town had the Q&A set-up, with CV's own golfbag & clubs on display that he used in the British Open, just 2 days earlier. It made my golfbag look weak! Anyways, I heard that Golf Town was going to be giving away one of his golfbags, signed, to one lucky winner...meaning I had 1 in 99 odds! Regardless, I wasn't holding my breath.

After jumping in line for the Q&A/signing, 3pm rolled around, and Camilo Villegas came out to the area with Bob Weeks...who was to host the Q&A forum. Weeks is the editor for Score Golf magazine, a Canadian Golf publication. Weeks went through the standard questions; "How did you get into golf?", "Who was your favourite golfer growing up?", and "How did you feel winning your 1st tournament?".

The only question I enjoyed was one asked by someone in crowd, asking what is in your bag? He went on to joke that he has so many clubs, that it looks more like a LPGA bag, than he own lately! (It was a joke on the limit of clubs between the 2 pro-tours). Ii liked that he pulled out each club, knowing when he got it, what the loft was, and why he changed it to the current model he currently uses. That's knowing your craft!

After the Q&A, Weeks & CV pulled the winner of the British Open Golf Bag....and it was...not me. In fact, I didn't win the 3 hats they drew for afterwards. Sad eh?! Just kidding! An older gentleman won the bag, and Villegas personalized the bag to him. CV autographed the 3 hats, that were drawn for afterwards.

Camilo Villegas made his way to the signing table, and proceeded to start signing autographs. I was about 35th in line as I looked at my watch, 3:45pm...leaving me exactly 2 hours to get to work, I was starting to get nervous! About 20 minutes later, it was about about to me my turn!

I noticed a Golf Town employee beside the signing table, and I asked her to take my photo with Villegas, if she didn't mind. She said sure, no problem. So I left her with my trusted camera...which I thought was good to go.

I finally got up to the front of line, and greeted Camilo Villegas! After exchanging greetings, I handed him my 8x10 which he placed a signature on. I noticed the Golf Town girl took a photo of CV signing for me. I asked him, if he would sign my Titliest golf ball? He said sure, took it, and began to autograph it for me. While he was signing, I asked him if i could get a quick photo with him, which he agreed to.

Camilo Villegas and I smiled and posed for the camera, that the Golf Town employee was about to take.

Then she spoke.

"I'm sorry, but it says your memory card is full...it won't take a picture!"

If the Earth could of opened up at that moment, I would of jumped in!

Villegas said; "Sorry buddy!", as the next person in line approached him. Embarrassed I went to the girl, who apologized, and I said no problem, it happens! Well, it wasn't all that bad, right?! Who are we kidding?! It was great! I just got two FREE autographs, from a fantastic golfer! There was I deciding whether or not, I wanted to ask for another picture with CV, when I noticed...THE TIME! 4pm, time to move! It was rush hour!

I decided to leave. As I went to walk outside, a flash of lightning went across the darkening skies! DAMN! I ran to the Highlander, and jumped inside! The rain was torrential! Alright, now it was to face the 401...and try to make it to work on time!

I guess, I'm dragging this out...so here's the short end of it all...traffic was okay, in fact I made it home, dropped off the autographs, kissed my wife, and went to work ON TIME! :)

Well that's it for part one of the three part series I've titled "3 signings...2 days...all free!".

I hoped you enjoyed it! Part 2 will be along in the next couple of days!

On the cover of a Rolling Stone's album!

Welcome back!

This blog was originally meant to document my "in-person" autograph adventures, and has done so...so far!

But recently, I had such an great "in the mail" autograph success, I thought I'd share it with everyone!

About 4 months ago, I was re-reading one of my back issues of "Autograph Collector" magazine. It's a great read for those who like reading about autograph successes, and historical autographs. One area of the magazine includes addresses, so you write to your favourite celebrity. AC usually has over different one hundred addresses in their magazine each month.

However this edition had an article, that included a celebrity address. A Rolling Stones fan wrote about how he had recent autograph success, with an English address, writing to the Stones' drummer, Charlie Watts. His article spoke of how he wrote to the legendary drummer 3 times over the last 2 years, with Watts responding each time, signing everything he sent! This really peaked my curiousity! Apparently, to this writer, Watts was a fantastic (personalizing) signer through the mail!

Quick note; "Personalizing" signer means, a celebrity who puts your name on the item they're signing. ie; "To Corinna, All the best or Best Wishes, Charlie Watts". Most celebrities, who personalize, do this to prevent the sale of their autographs, on eBay, craigslist, and other sale sites. Personally, I don't sell autographs. Ever.

After reading about Watts good signing habits, I thought that could be great autograph to get. Now the real question would be; What to get Charlie Watts, of the Rolling Stones, to sign?

Recently, I was in Busters (kind of a pawn shop), and noticed they had used records. I couldn't remember if they had a used Stones album, but I thought that would be cool to get signed...a Rolling Stones album! So, after short 5 minute drive, I arrived at Busters, greeted the owner, and went to the used records area. After flipping through a few hundred records, I finally came across a Stones album! They had "Rolling Stones, Still Life; The American Concert". Awesome, a live double record! It was fairly priced...4 dollars! It was cheaper than printing off an 8x10 photo!

Afer slapping my 4 bucks down, I left Busters to head to the Post Office to find 2 envelopes large enough to fit the record...to send to England, and back. Luckily there was bubble mailers for sale (an envelope that has an air bubble pocket to protect its contents) that were large enough for the album to fit into safely. After spending 6 bucks on the 2 large envelopes, I was heading home, to finalize the project.

When I got home, I decided to write a letter to Charlie Watts, explaining that I was a fan of his music, thanking him for continunally touring, and requesting an autograph. After writing a nice letter to the legendary drummer, I broke open the Autograph Collector mag again, to get the address. After writing Watts' address on one envelope, and my address on the other...I put the record, letter, and my SASE into the Watts' addressed envelope.

Back to the post office I went.

Once there, I went to purchase Canadian postage to the UK, and English postage to return. I was informed, they did not sell English stamps. DAMN! After taking a second to think about what to do, I decided to throw 10 dollars into the letter to Charlie, hoping it would be enough for him to pay for English postage back to Canada. After stuffing everything into the large envelope (again), I paid the 5 bucks to ship it to the UK...and mailed it.

One month went by.

Two months went by.

Three months went by.

At this point, I gave up on the autograph...since the magazine article said they got it back in about 6 weeks. Since I didn't have the proper postage to send it back to Canada, I figured the album et al, was tossed in the garbage. After thinking about all that...I gave up on the idea all together, and forgot about it.

Four months went by.

Then one day, I was checking the mail and got a key in the mailbox, to check the parcel mailbox area. When I slipped the key into the lock, it hit me what it could be! When I opened the door...sure enough...it was the return envelope from Charlie Watts! YES!

Basically, I ran back into my house telling my wife, Corinna, that I got something back from the UK! She smiled and asked if it was the record album? I said...let's see! I was glad to see that it the right envelope, addressed to me and not a "return to sender" envelope. I ripped into the package, and pulled out my album, back facing me.

When I flipped it over...there it was. CHARLIE WATTS' AUTOGRAPH! Sweet! He personalized to me and signed it underneath. "To Chris, Charlie Watts '09!" Both Corinna and I stared at it, basically trying to figuring out Watts' signature...we couldn't really make it out. Personally I think he signs his intials, in a fancy way and adds the year. Regardless, I now had the biggest band on Earth drummer's autograph! When I opened the album, just to see if he wrote a note back...I found something.

Charlie Watts didn't write an note back, he simply gave me back my 10 dollar bill, that I sent him for postage! How kind is that?! He picked up the 3 pounds postage to send the record back to Canada! That's about 7.50 Canadian. I found it really nice, that he would pay for the postage himself to send an autograph back to Canada for a fan. Really nice.

Well that's about it for this autograph adventure, thanks for reading, and sorry for a delay between stories!

Many, many, many thanks to Charlie Watts for his time and kindness!

See ya soon,
Chris
